It would be safe to say that everyone loves music. Music has a significant effect on us and our emotions. Everyone needs music in their lives. God created music; listen to the different bird songs. Listen to the sounds of the whales. God is the author of music. Before you get ready to argue with me, remember I said He is the music author; I didn’t say all music. I don’t believe tunes or sounds with vulgar lyrics are God’s definition of music. Many Bible books are songs such as Song of Solomon, the Psalms, Lamentations, and Ecclesiastes.
That’s not to say we should only listen to hymns or Christian music 24/7. There are different types of music; truthfully, not everyone will agree on the same type of music. Do you think God wants us all to listen to the same type of music? Some people believe only certain types of music are Biblical. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I have no right to judge them; they have no right to judge me for the types of music I enjoy. Aren’t you glad God doesn’t expect us to be all the same? He has given us free will. I am not writing this post to argue what type of music is good or bad. I am writing about how music can affect our actions and emotions.
Since I am semi-retired and have some extra time on my hands, I noticed that I wasn’t listening to music as often as I usually would. Music was often playing in my car on my way to work. Now that I was spending more time at home, I would feel pessimistic, even moody. I didn’t realize how music affected me. I wondered what was wrong. Then one day, I realized that I wasn’t listening to music. Now that I had found the problem, the solution was easy, start listening to music again.
Music soothes the soul. I believe that! I love classical music and enjoy listening to it when I need something soothing in the background. Yet, when I am cleaning, classical music slows me down. I enjoy listening to Country, Disney, and The Beach Boys. I need something to keep my mind busy when I clean and speed up my actions. I remember going to Maine with my son, sister, and her kids, and we played The Beach Boys on our one-hour trip. It was preparing us for the beach, and we had a blast singing along with the music. By the time we arrived, we were in great moods.
My son and I love music, and I remember we would listen to various types. He, to this day, will ask if I have heard a particular song and then play it. I will give my honest opinion. He has opened my eyes to many singers and songs. Do we agree on all music? No, but I will not allow our differences to affect our relationship. Too many parents and people are so closed-minded that they miss many opportunities to enrich their relationships with their children or friends. It’s ok to agree to disagree! But is it worth severing a relationship?
Before judging me, I didn’t allow certain types of music in my house when I was rearing my son. We talked extensively about music. I listened to Ron Hamilton’s Patch the Pirate tapes for years. They are great tapes for children. My grandchildren listen to them. However, when my son became an adult, he chose his type of music. I can guarantee he doesn’t listen to Patch the Pirate tapes when working out at the gym. LOL!
God created music and wants us to enjoy it! Maybe it can help you during a tough time in your life. Perhaps it can give you the strength to face an impossible situation. It can comfort you in times of loss. It can lift your mood and provide you with hope. Music is there for our enjoyment. Listen and enjoy!
