Yesterday my sister and I spent the day at a Flea Market. We enjoyed searching for treasures to purchase. My type of treasures includes clothing, while antiques are her treasured finds. We came upon a rock collector and his collection when we walked inside the last building. One of the items that captured our attention was the geode section. We saw what appeared to be mud balls, yet we discovered beautiful crystal formations upon opening the rocks.
I decided to purchase one for my grandson, and she also bought one. My mind began thinking about the geode and the lesson we could learn from it. We usually form first impressions of a person by looking at the outside. Their clothing, cleanliness, and mannerisms help form our opinion of them. Yet, this is the opposite of how we should look at people. The Bible in I Samuel 16:7 says, “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'” There are times when we need to look at a person’s appearance for safety reasons. However, in most cases, we tend to judge people wrongly. They may appear chaotic in appearance, yet as we get to know them better, we find that they are not what we first thought they were. Just like the geode, which appeared to be a mud ball unattractive rock, it held a wealth of beauty in the interior.
Upon investigating, I discovered that most geodes are formed in volcanos—the igneous rock formed with air pockets. Water with minerals seeped inside the stones, and then when the water evaporated, the minerals left behind would form the crystals. The crystals could be a variety of colors from purple, yellow, rust, black, and translucent.
No two geodes are alike, which is the same in identifying people. We are all made “Fearfully and Wonderfully” by God. Each one of us has a unique purpose, personality, and gifts. When we allow God to control our lives, His Holy Spirit fills that void and forms beauty inside us that is indescribable.
Here are some questions for all of us to answer: Are you one of God’s children? Have you placed your trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins? If so, have you allowed the Holy Spirit to control all the areas of your life? Are you fulfilling God’s purpose for your life?
Is your life like a beautiful geode on the inside, resulting from your surrender to the Holy Spirit and obedience to God’s Word?
